The World Progresses Because...

The world progresses because humans want more. We are evolutionarily wired to never be content with what we have. My guess is that this is because the human brain is always:

  • Putting self-preservation first as the P0 goal, since one can never do enough to guarantee self-preservation.
  • Optimizing for newer and different experiences.
  • Trying to devise plans against known and unknown risks. These include real events (being eaten by a tiger, being washed away in a flood, or being left behind by your tribe) and tail risks that go beyond the needs of food, shelter, and relationships.

And therefore, we have constructed the world around us so that everything satisfies "humans want more."
