Why I won't use AI to write first drafts
Unless you have been living under a rock, you know that AI can write better than you (the average person). AI can express ideas in a simpler, clearer, and more compelling fashion...or any fashion you want, really. The question is: Should you let it?
It is useful to start by thinking about ghostwriters. AI is 10x better than I am at writing and is improving. Many other people in the world are also 10x better than I am at writing. Can I "commission" these people (as "ghostwriters") to write posts for me? Yes. Should I? Nope. Why?
- Writing ideas makes me feel as if I learn these ideas much, much better than just reading or listening to them. (I have the same feeling when voicing them or teaching them to another human or practicing these ideas). Most humans I know share this assumption though I don't know if there is good evidence for it.
- Writing ideas guarantees they are expressed in my style and my voice, which I obviously associate with much better than someone else's style.
- This blog is a place for me to learn. Based on the points above, I will learn best when I read/practice an idea and write it myself in my style and voice.
- If an AI writes ideas on my behalf after I read/practice them, I will just be reading ideas again, reducing my learning. Outsourcing the thinking does not magically plant that thinking in my head.
- Hence, no.
- My rationale for not using AI when writing has nothing to do with being a "purist" or "wanting to preserve an art form." No, I don't really care about either of those.
Should I use AI in writing at all? Yes. As an editor after I have written down my version of the post. Don't be stupid and deny yourself wonderful tools. A side benefit IMO is that editing is feedback, which helps me learn how to write better.
